Bye, Bye Summer

Wow!  What a crazy summer this has been!  We have moved and are starting work in a new school on Monday.  I am going to be teaching middle school English and Spanish!  Crazy.  As for the kittens, they are all happy and healthy.  Three were given to good families and three still live with me...well, sort of...in my neighborhood at least.  They are enjoying the freedom this small community gives them to wander about and climb trees!  (Did I mention there are trees here!)  They come to see us about chow time and one, Feebee, loves to pretend to be an inside cat.  She will quietly get on the couch or in a corner and take a nap for hours.  Curious has turned out to be a favorite of my new friend and next-door neighbor.  Hollis is so beautiful it is beyond words.  Oh, and bonus, my sister-in-law has given us another kitten.  She is a tiny marble calico who was called Pumpkin for a while, until we learned how crazy she was.  I now call her Loquita.  She is sweet, but you have to watch your toes around her, and make sure you have on sufficient clothes!

Another One Gone

Well, when my fourth graders heard that I had kittens to give away, of course they all wanted one. One of the boys, though, does live in town and I knew he would take care of one. Sure enough, he and his sister showed up at my door this afternoon to pick one up. Mama said he could have one if it was a boy. So he took Benji. He was such a cutie with beautiful eyes. He promised to take care of him and I could see in his eyes it meant a lot to him. He is a sweet kid and he has really being down about us moving. I hope that the cat will always be special to him.

They Are Up for Grabs!

Well, I 've been away for a while because the family is moving. WE have taken two loads already. Since we are moving into town, we can't take all the outside kitties, so we are trying to find good homes for them. Holstein has already been adopted by my daughter's best friend. So, if you are in the west Texas area, or central Texas, contact me. I bottle fed them so I have a special bond with them. These little guys are so sweet, I hate to take them to a shelter. Well, I will probably refuse to do that anyway. So, I have to work like crazy to get them adopted.

The Kitties Are Ready to Go!!!

Anyone want a kitty? Now that we have nursed them and they are eating independently, we have made the decision to move and now have to find homes for four of these little guys. I did convince my husband to let me take two little girls with me and our big boy. He is so sweet. We are now calling him Uncle Andy. He grooms them and plays very gently with them and lets them have first crack at the food bowl. Amazing huh? I couldn't leave him behind. Well, I guess my blog will now be about our 200 mile move. Tomorrow the word is out. We will announce to the kids tomorrow, and I am not looking forward to it. I am not sure how they will react, but I am pretty sure some of the girls will cry. It will be the hardest move ever. I have had the same kids in class for three years in a row. Plus, I am quite attached to several of the older students as well. This is also the first time our daughter is old enough to miss her friends. She is taking it really well and gave her final consent to our move after touring the school. We will keep you updated on our switch to gorillaland!

We're keeping Phoebe and Littlebit.

Kamikaze Kittens

Okay, this one needs a video. I will try my best to describe this. When we go out to the shed where we have the kittens kept, they stand on one of the boxes and jump as far as they can to try and get to us. It is cute and funny and sad all at the same time. In their vigor to get fed (they are by no means starving, they are just cats!) they don't even realize that there is no way in the world they are ever going to clear the top of the board we have nailed up to keep them in. They just keep doing the same crazy jump into mid-air over and over. They fly up and then sink rapidly down to the floor. Some of them have even jumped onto my hand while I am picking another one up. This morning though, they ate more of the canned food. All but one oftheir little noses smelled of it when I checked. I still gave them the bottle, but most didn't eat as much as usual. This is a great sign. By this time next week I can probably put the bottle away again. Oh, and one of the high school kids is going to feed them for me over the weekend. He is the Science teacher's kid, so I have great faith in him. Yay! I get to go see my mom!

Still Waiting on the Kitties

Okay. I keep waiting for these guys to figure this eating thing out. You eat the food....crunch...crunch....your full. Yes, all but one are eating almost exclusively from the bottle. And the one, she won't even sniff the bottle. She goes right to the bowl of milk every time. I have even seen her eating the hard food. Anyway, I love these guys. they are so cute and mostly sweet, but the one is definately my favorite. Her name is now Phoebe. She drinks her milk and then climbs up my leg to my lap. Most of the time she will stay content and purring in my lap while I feed the other five. She's a sweetheart.

The Kitties, My Mom and Jury Duty

Apparently the powers that be have conspired once again against my trip to see my mom this weekend. Got a jury duty summons in the mail Friday! For Monday, the day after Mother's Day, the day we don't have school!!!! So I am supposed to do my civic duty and spend my day off in some court waiting around. Yuck. Plus, if I do get someone to feed the kittens, I will still have to come back from my trip early. Feels like a Monday!

Six Little Bitty Kittens and One Big Baby

This is the one my daughter named Curious. He is definately the dominate male and the strongest of the bunch. He also stands out from all of his black siblings. Last night our older cat Shy Andy was the cutest though. I was sitting on our porch cleaning some of the kittens and he came and sat right next to me. Finally, he flopped down against my leg and rolled on his back. So cute to see him wanting just as much attention as the little guys are getting. I also think he might be drinking their milk while I am gone. Don't worry, though, they are still getting plenty to eat!!!!!

Kitty Pictures Are Here!

Hey all. Found my camera. Here are pictures of our babies. They are doing well, really thriving on the bottle. Not eating so much solid food yet. We are working on that one. The grown ones like it though.

Six Kitty Update

Well, my camera is missing in action. As soon as I locate it, I will get those pics up. The kittens have moved up in the world. They now have full access to the shed in our backyard. They were getting a bit crowded and poopy inside their carrier. I guess not having a momma to clean them means they need more space. This morning, five of them drank out of the milk dish, for a few seconds at least. That's a step in the right direction. I don't think they will be ready to go on their own so I can go see my mom for Mother's Day. I don't know if I can find anyone to take care of them that weekend or not. Bummer, because we are out of school on that Monday!

These little guys are making a mess everywhere!!!

Six Little Orphan Kitties

Okay, my friend and her kids pulled up to my house Sunday night. Do I still want some kittens? she said. Yes, of course (that's my standard reply when it comes to kittens). Well, the neighbor lady (aka super-crazy-cat-lady) said one of her cats was missing and had left six kittens behind. My friend's husband had heard them walking home from church they were crying so loud. (Of course, this guy wanted to just do away with them.) So I go out to the pickup and there in a box are six squirmy kittens that are thankfully just old enough to almost eat on their own. About 3-4 weeks I would say. Yes, some of them lap up the milk from the bowl, but they all prefer to suck something. Generally this sucking involves claws and teeth in some way. I don't know how momma cats do it!!!!! Anyway, about four times a day, my daughter and I feed them. This process takes about 40 minutes. They are so cute though. I can't wait until they grow a little more and can eat. I worry too much that they are getting enough or too much. I will keep you updated and add pictures later.

Project Green Update

Well, I have now given away 34 bags and made a total of 57 (16 last night). Our trash group actually went to pick up this morning without me reminding them. A step in the right direction. We also have three very full boxes of old plastic bags to take to walmart for recycling. Already had volunteers to help. The recycling group is also working on a contest to see who can bring the most cans for recycling.

Earth Day Bag Give-Away!!!!

Welcome to Earth Day! My class has been working on environmental projects for about a month now. I divided them into three groups and they chose their topics. One group is doing water conservation, another trash and pollution and the other is doing recycling. They have worked really hard. The recycling group has called every county employee trying to get a true recycling program in our small rural town. Unfortunately, they have not met with many people that were willing to help. Let's call all three projects "in progress". I told them, since they did not vote to do a project on plastic bags, that I would be in charge of that one. A couple of students donated some fabrics to reuse. I took these fabrics and made them into reusable shopping bags. I even made my own stamp out of some old packing materials that were headed to the trash, and stamped our project name on them. ---Project Green 2008--- I have now given each student one and we are now giving them out to any student in the school who brings a bundle of plastic sacks to recycle. This morning I gave out nine bags to the first and kindergarden students. I talked to their classes yesterday about our project. Three of my own students have also brought bags to trade. Well, we are doing our best to make this Earth a better place. I hope you have great plans for Earth Day too. Please post a comment about how you will participate in Earth Day so that I can share it with my class. Also, look for a give away PIF on my Etsy site. I will give one of these bags away to anyone around the world.
Update:
We have now given away 30 bags. We have 11 left and I have to go home and make more!

I Think it's Fixed

Well, I didn't get any sewing done this weekend, but used the machine a little on Thursday and I think using the correct oil finally helped. It seems okay. The true test is when I run it for a couple of hours tonight. Almost through with all the reusable shopping bags I am making for our class project. I will post pictures of the piles of them tonight.

PS...My mom came for a visit to see my daughter play volleyball. We had a good, but short, visit. Wish she lived closer!

Calling all Singer Repair-people!!!

Okay. I oiled it, it was running much better, and now it is going clank, clank! I only used it about an hour! Now I am frantically searching the internet for advice. If you know anything about really old sewing machines, please contact me.

My Poor, Poor Old Sewing Machine!

Yes, I made most of the rice bag innards last night. Still have the covers to make and about 20 reuable shopping bags to finish. My class is working on an ecology project and my part is to take recycled materials and make shopping bags. But, after all of this continuous sewing, my machine is starting to rattle a bit and I am not going to use it until I locate the oil and get it nice and oily on the inside. From the diagram, it could take from 2-8 hours for me to figure out where it all goes. I haven't used my machine much in the past few years.

Rice Bag-o-Rama

A good friend and former co-worker of mine just emailed me and wants to order 12 rice bags! Yay!! Isn't it amazing that my local sales are making me tons more money than my Etsy worldwide website? Thank goodness for friends. BTW I love my new neck bag and I am having a hard time keeping it because my daughter keeps using it for her volleyball soreness. Another friend wants me to make one that she can wear around her back. That's one I will have to figure out. OH, and can someone go to town and get me some rice from Wallyworld? I'm running low for some reason.
Oh, and check out my new MIT Theater T-shirt.

Testing Question

This past week I had to give a state test called the TAKS test to the fifth grade class. At part of the test, students are given a piece of paper that has measurement info and rulers printed on it to use on the test. The test instructions called this a "seperate mathmatics chart". The instructions I had to read repeated the fact that the students could not write on this chart probably seven or eight times. It got a bit rediculous. Anyway, all the students were feeling a bit tense and everytime I had to read that part again I would kind of grin at the craziness of it. The kids would roll their eyes. Finally I got to the end of the instructions and, of course, it asked, "Are there any other questions?" I looked around at the class. One boy raised his hand and a smile came to his face. He asked, "Mrs. M, are we allowed to write on the seperate mathmatics chart?" With this, the class collectively laughed and a rush of tension left the room so we could begin the test. Someday that kid is going to write sitcoms for TV!

Last Night's Visitors

We had two visitors last night on our back porch. My husband was out watering, and called us all to come and look. There were two hummingbird moths feeding on our new hanging baskets. I grabbed my camera and started shooting. They were really hard to catch with my digital, but I took tons of pics so I ended up with quite a few shots. By the end of my battery life, the little guys were flitting all around us, making circles around me especially, and hovering around my legs. I was able to stand super close to the flowers. They didn't seem bothered at all by our presence or my camera flash. Aren't they the cutiest moths you have ever seen?

Oprah's Puppy Mill Show

This show was so sad! We just watched it last night on our DVR. My MIL had told my husband about it. As a dog lover, I cannot believe these people can live with themselves for treating animals the way they do, just to make a buck! There will be a special place in the afterlife for these horrible people. It makes me want to quit my job and go around with the people who save these animals. They are all so sweet. I would take them all and end up with way too many dogs myself I guess. I am attaching a picture of Bella. We rescued her from a shelter which had put back her E-date because she was so sweet they couldn't bare to put her down. Unfortunately she died shortly after we got her, but it was sweet while it lasted. I still miss her, but I know she has a comfortable place up in heaven beside my daddy, Prince and Ginger.

Stop Me If You Have Heard This One

This is an old one but it really happened. In fact, I think it has happened more than once, but never to me.

My husband was on playground duty one day. The kids know not to come tattle all the time to him, but if something really bad happens they should let him know. So, one of the more well behaved children comes up to him and says "B said the F-word!" Suddenly, this child has my husband's full attention. This is a pretty big transgression for an elementary student. Before he set the punishment in motion, he wanted to be sure that this student had heard B clearly. After interviewing her for a minute or two he asked her to repeat the word.
"You won't be in trouble," he told her, "I just need to know exactly what B said."
"Well...." the little girl hesitated, "He said fart." After my husband stopped laughing he actually called B over and told him not to say fart again.

BTW: The S-word is shut up!

Elementary Teacher Predictions

You know, when you spend eight hours a day for 138 or more days a year with a group of kids, in your head you start making predictions about what they will be and who they will become. It is inevitable! One year I had a class so wild, so unruly, and so defiant, I could swear that some of them were destined for Huntsville! I kept this to myself of course. I didn't really want to think ill of them. Most of them were sweet souls with no self control at all. Well, I don't know much about what happened to this class. I do know that one of the worst of the bunch is now happily married with....get this....six children! I am so glad he is not in jail. Now, as for the teachers who work in that area....prepare yourselves!

My Favorite Story

I've got lots of funny and sad stories. This is my favorite.

Teachers don't have favorites. Teachers don't have pets. I will always stand by this as true. But if I did have a favorite it would have to be one of the most rambunctious, rowdy students I ever had. This is the kid that you had to tell twenty times a day to sit down or be quiet. "D, don't drum on the desk...pay attention...leave them alone." And yet, this kid has a special place in my heart. It didn't take me long to see once the year started, that D was not what he seemed. He wasn't the troublemaker that I had been led to believe. Instead, I saw what should have been obvious. I beautiful heart inside that constantly moving body. Also, what I soon determined, was that the other boys in the class would constantly pick at him and try to make him mad. Especially at PE class. They soon learned though, that I saw right through them. By the end of the year I hated to see D go. I hated to think he was going to another classroom. Who would be teaching him? Would they understand him? Or would he end up constantly in trouble? Constantly being yelled at? Put down? It broke my heart to see him go. My class has never been quite the same since. The best part of the story is the next year. I would see him in the halls and he would always give me a big hug and talk to me for a minute. One day, before school he handed me a folded piece of construction paper that he had made into a card. It said, "I love you. Thanks for taking my side against J and C." That is one piece of paper that I will always treasure as much as anything my own daughter has made. I still think about and pray for him. I hope that he is surrounded by people that understand and support him. Someday I hope to travel across Texas to see him play football. But, of course, I don't have any favorites. Never! I love you D!

Vegetarian Vultures and Other Tales from the Classroom

There are so many tales. Some of which are so old I may not remember them. I am an elementary teacher. I have been teaching for seventeen years. Yes, I have lots of stories. Stories that will curl your hair...some might make it fall out! I will start posting them here as I remember them. Here's a new fresh one.

I have recently divided my class into two groups for a special project. I thought I would use our school initials to name them so that there would be no A, B...A's are better than B's business. So they were group B and group V. Well, in the course of calling them I discovered they are so close sounding that I needed to name them. So I started calling them Buffalo and Vultures, just to be silly. When one girl whined that she didn't want to be a buffalo I told her that it was better than a vulture because they eat dead stinky skunks. Then, my comedianne from the V group said..."Ewww. If I have to be a vulture, I am going to be a vegetarian vulture!"

My Husband Needs to Blog

Hello out there in blogger land. I told my husband today that he needs to start a blog. He will probably never do it, but if he did it would be much better than mine. He is quite the expert in all things financial, but he is stuck in his job as a coach...which he loves....most of the time. I just think his knowledge is a bit wasted on me. He has taught me most of it. He also talks to the kids...but there are many more people who need this kind of advice in the world.

On HOLD with Toshiba!

Call #1
Okay, I called Toshiba Saturday about a charge they made on my credit card. On Saturday I was told that since it was Sunday I needed to call back the next day on Monday so I could talk to someone in customer service.

Call #2
Called on Sunday...which should be Monday by their logic. Anyway, I told the whole story again and was told that customer relations is closed on Sunday(??????) and to call back on Monday between 8 and 8 Eastern time.

Call #3
Yes, it is really Monday.
This call lasted 43 minutes and the end of which I was disconnected by them.

Call #4
Still Monday, I called back. This call, in which I had to again explain what I needed lasted 39 minutes before they disconnected me.

Call #5
(Yes, I am stubborn!) $86 is $86. Still Monday, about one hour before closing. This call I asked to go straight to customer relations, which I go to go to hold. 36 minutes later I am disconnected by them again!

Call #6
Monday still, I just talked to the info people to try and get some info on when and where the charges took place. This call lasted 10 minutes in which I was told that the representitive would call me in 1 to 5 business days.

Call #7
To the credit card company, which said it would take care of the charge.

Call #8
My husband thought he could make something happen and called the same number. He gave up after 16 minutes on hold.

Final story still to come. In 1 to 5 business days.

IN the meantime, read my forum post:

My Newest Monster is a Cat

Here is my newest bath monster for kids. Several people had told me to make a cat or a dog. Well, I tried the cat first. I knew the ears would be easier. Anyway, I love it and so does my real cat Zoe! She didn't even hiss...which might mean Purrful, bath monster number nine, doesn't look a lot like a cat or at least doesn't smell like one.

Still only one student. He was late and I was afraid he wasn't coming either. So, I sent him with fifth grade to CEI, got my summative conference done, and now he is going to read to me as soon as he finishes his spelling. He also brought money for me to make a scarfette for his mom. What a sweetie! Anyway....if your reading this, thanks! I hope you have a great day where you are. Best wishes!
Hers will be blue and baby blue, but alot like this.

One Student!!!

Good morning all. Here I am in my classroom. Why am I not busy teaching 15 minutes into the school day??? Could it be because I only have one student attending today! One is gone to the Houston Stock Show. The other two...who knows? This hasn't ever happened to me in 17 years of teaching! Well, I know someone will get loads of AR points today. He needs it!

Have a great day where you are!

Anyone Seen My Cat?

Anyone seen this beautiful cat.
She was Mama cat. She was a great mama for several litters of kittens, three of which we still have. She was beautiful, protective and she loved me...finally, after months of attention. Her trust took a while to earn. I know you haven't seen her. I know the horrible truth is that she was killed by the coyotes that roam near here. REst in Peace Mama.

LOST

Okay, I want to know your opinion of Lost this year. Do you like the new turns and twists? I love the show and am total hooked of course, but I have a feeling if I was a new viewer I would have given up on the show by now. First off, where's Sawyer. This see-sawing back and forth is rather soap operaey. They tempt us with nice juicey scenes of Sawyer three weeks ago. Wow! Then last week, NO SAWYER! Now, this week, very little Sawyer. I don't care to see Ben every week, but we seem to. I wish Sawyer would kill him already. Maybe that's why Locke let him out!

Captain USA

Okay, I looked at a picture of Captain America so I could figure out how to make a super hero. I think I will call him the blue flash. I should have put more red in to call him Capt. USA.

Lennyy

This is Lennyy the Bath Monster.

He can help kids have a good time and get clean. Made especially for little hands and completely washable and safe for the little ones. He is Bath Monster 1 in what will hopefully be a long line of Bath Monsters. I think he is already spoken for, but check my site for more.

Friday, February 29, 2008

Yeah! It's Friday.
So the Martha thing hasn't lived up to its hype yet. I knew not to get my hopes up. I just wish I could get more sales. But, I also see all the fabulous things that all the creative people on Etsy make and think, "Hey. Someone ought to buy these. " It is a shame to see all the talent that is out there and know that it is not being appreciated.

LOST

Spoiler Warning.....NOT

Sorry, not much to spoil this week. This is what happened...crazy weirdness and not a single scene with Sawyer.

More hotness. Killer arm warmers in my favorite two colors!

What do you think of this killer purse?
Just finished this about an hour ago.
I love it.
Don't know if I can sell it.
I guess I'll give it a shot. I can always keep it if it doesn't sell.

Tired, Sick, Want to Scream

You know, I can take a lot of things coming through my email box. I have read and deleted thousands of worthless emails. And, I have been offended before. I love Jesus. I don't have to send your email out just to certify that. But, today's offense, by yet another of my coworkers, makes me want to respond right back to them. But I don't dare of course. Might make someone mad. I have to work with these people! Well, today, I got another Hillary bashing email. Now, even if I didn't support her, I would be offended. Have I got a hateful, name calling email about any other candidate? Of course NOT! Why do we, especially in the south, feel it is okay to downgrade a strong woman? I am offended. I am offended. I am offended. What else can I say.

Ebay Kicked Me Off Today

We got up this morning and had an email from ebay saying they had removed my listing. I was trying ebay out, one last ditch effort to get it sold. It IS almost Spring you know. Anyway, apparently it is illegal to use the word "like" in the listing title. I really think they searched and found the etsy comment in the description and bumped me off because of that. What do you think? I should have never even bothered. Like I should have told them that like I was a teenager in the 80s and I like talk like that like all the time. Remember the Valley Girls. I always wanted to be a Zappa!

Monday, Monday, Monday

Yes, I am just continuing with this blog, and my two jobs. I am starting to feel like Etsy is a job. I wish I could do it full time. There are so many things I would like to make. So many things I would like to try. Just don't have time. I haven't used my sewing machine in so long. I am sure it misses me. Have I told you about my sewing machine? Of course not. It was my mothers. She bought it when she was in college at a discount. It is a fabulous baby blue Singer. I love it. I have not used many other machines in my life. Just in Home Ec back when they used to have Home Ec. I love it and I don't know if I could ever learn to use any other one!

Made it in a treasury.

American Idol Night

Hey, I made my first trade today. It was actually exciting that I could get something I wanted and that someone else wanted something I make. If you look at my sold items it is pretty crazy that there are five identical items out of six.

So, anyway, I was knitting through all of the Idol tonight, but I think the people who went home were about right. I would have picked someone else besides Colton, but he still wouldn't have been around much longer. Anyone else think that we could just fast forward to the top 12 right now. Anyone else have trouble telling the difference between all the young blonde girls? Just wondering.

Today's Craziness

It has been a long year. I'm talking school year. I teach fourth and fifth grades in a very small rural school. Now, when I say very small, I know some people probably think I mean just a few thousand people. No, small to me, since I started the fifth grade myself, is about ten kids per class. My school has a total population of about 130 students, in grades PK to 12. OKay, do you believe me. My fourth grade class started out as the smallest in the school and has now dwindled down to just four students. Luckily, they are all fun, interesting kids.

Now to the crafts. I started watching and shopping etsy last fall, mainly because of some of my favorite sellers from ebay. Poppy and Turtle. I will talk more about my inspirations later. So, I said, I can do this. I am always making stuff, and then it just lays around the house or I end up giving it to someone. So I started making things with the intent of selling them and started my own store. So far, I have sold five items. I am hoping for more though.

Oh, but there has been more to my year. I will talk more about it another day. I wrote a novel in a month. Yes. I wrote over 50,000 words in the month of November, and many of my students wrote novels too!

Let me know if you see and read this. In other words, is there anyone out there?
